Marble Buying Guide

By Floor & Decor

From classical Greek architecture to Italian Renaissance art, marble is known for its beauty and loved by architects, artists, and homeowners alike for its appearance in addition to its durability. The options for customizing marble for your home make it even more unique than it already is. This marble stone buying guide takes you through the edges and finishes available at Floor & Decor, as well as tips for maintenance and care, to personalize your home with maximum marble impact.

Types of Marble Edges

Marble edges influence the design and feel of any room. We offer three types of edges, including straight, beveled, and chiseled.

Straight edges, also known as rectified edges, are perfectly cut at 90-degree angles and use minimal grout lines for smooth and harmonious looks.

Beveled edges are flat-angled edges that provide visual depth and dimension to any home room.

Chiseled or tumbled edges are produced by chipping marble edges for cozy, rustic room looks.

The Different Kinds of Marble Finishes

The most common marble finishes we carry are honed, polished, brushed, and textured finishes.

[Honed finishes](https://www.flooranddecor.com/marble-stone?prefn1=finish&prefv1=Honed%7CMatte) are velvet smooth and muted and matte-like in style. The honed finish is less likely to scratch and works better in wet environments than a polished finish.

[Polished finishes](https://www.flooranddecor.com/marble-stone?prefn1=finish&prefv1=Polished%20or%20High%20Gloss) feel extremely smooth and give marble shine and sheen for maximum elegance. The polished finish is better suited for areas less susceptible to water and works well for both walls and floors.

[Brushed finishes](https://www.flooranddecor.com/marble-stone?prefn1=finish&prefv1=Brushed) are soft and worn in texture, giving marble the visual effect of natural aging. The brushed finish is more resistant to scratches and marks.

[Textured finishes](https://www.flooranddecor.com/marble-stone?prefn1=finish&prefv1=Textured) add dimension to both the surface and appearance of marble. The textured finish is highly durable and ideal for backsplashes, fireplaces, and outdoor spaces.

Marble Maintenance and Care

Like any stone, marble requires maintenance and care, which we make convenient with our selection of sealers. Sealing marble, as instructed on sealer bottles, is essential before and after grouting to protect against stains settling in the stone’s surface and will protect your marble for years to come. Sweeping, mopping, or using stone-safe cleaners is recommended for maintaining your marble’s appeal.
